The very first step to take when you intend to buy a house in Italy is to apply for a Tax Code (Codice Fiscale).

The Tax Code is an alphanumeric code that identifies a person unequivocally and is a very important document for those who decide to live in Italy, not only for the payment of taxes and fiscal issues but also to obtain a number of rights, such as health care.
Without a tax code, in Italy, you can not even open a business or be hired as an employee, so you better apply for one if you want to purchase a property.

The tax code is very important for a foreigner who decides to live in Italy.
Thanks to it you can:

  • Obtain an employment contract.
    When you sign a contract with a company, in fact, the employer to register you asks for the tax code, without which he can not proceed to implement the relationship.
  • Open a VAT number if you intend to start a self-employed activity;

What are the necessary documents for the attribution of the Tax Code?

If you are an EU citizen: you must show your identification document + a double-faced photocopy.

If you are a non-EU citizen you have to show:
ID issued by the municipality in which you live;
Valid passport;
Residence permit.

Beside the documents listed above, in order to obtain the tax code, you must also submit the application form.

In Italy, you can apply for the tax code for yourself or another person.
In this case, you must fill in the application form in the section reserved for the request for third parties and you must also produce:

1. Your ID + photocopy on the back;
2. Photocopy on the front and back of the ID of the person requesting the tax code.
