I was seated at the end of a long table, surrounded by fourteen smiling, laughing faces glowing with the unmistakable joy of Christmas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This was il pranzo di Natale, Christmas lunch, in the home of Salvatore and Patrizia<\/em><\/strong>\u2014parents of our dear friend Antonio<\/strong><\/em>. In true Italian fashion, the entire family was present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Antonio\u2019s wife Mary<\/em><\/strong> was there\u2014Antonio and Mary<\/em> were our very first friends in San Vincenzo, the couple who helped us buy our unfinished home within days of our first San Vincenzo<\/strong> <\/em>visit, even though we were still living in Southern California<\/strong><\/em> at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mary\u2019s parents, Franca and Natale<\/em><\/strong>, joined us, along with Antonio and Mary\u2019s children, extended family, and close friends. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At one point, Franca <\/em><\/strong>approached me, smiling warmly, her kind, gentle eyes meeting mine. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She said something like, \u201c\u00c8 un piacere darti il benvenuto nella nostra famiglia.\u201d (\u201cIt\u2019s a pleasure to welcome you into our family.\u201d)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n


I may not have understood every word perfectly\u2014but I didn\u2019t need to. Her eyes said everything. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In that moment, I felt an overwhelming sense of belonging, moved by the warmth of a family we hadn\u2019t even known five years earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People here are greeted with hugs and kisses (both men and women) which is a nice display
of acceptance and love.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n


Sharing this six-hour, multi-course feast were people ranging from a six-month-old baby to grandparents in their seventies and eighties. Everything felt easy. Natural. Loving.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I realized how comfortable I had become\u2014not only sitting at an Italian table for hours but listening to Italian conversation flow around me. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I still have much to learn, but I could finally understand most of what was said and even speak enough to (usually) \u201cget by.\u201d That realization alone felt like a Christmas gift.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Christmas in Italy: Family, Festivities, and Food <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

(And how it differs from America)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n


I\u2019ve always loved Christmas, but living in Italy revealed something magical I never expected: Christmas here lasts a full month. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For someone like me, that discovery was pure joy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The season officially begins on December 8, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception<\/em><\/strong>, a national holiday when decorations traditionally go up. It ends on January 6, Epiphany<\/em><\/strong>\u2014twelve days after Christmas\u2014when decorations are taken down. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

(As with many Italian traditions, details vary widely by region.)
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throughout December, homes, piazzas (city squares), and streets glow with festive lights, stars, and decorations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet two elements reign supreme in Italian Christmas culture:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 – L\u2019Albero di Natale \u2013 the Christmas tree<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

2 – Il Presepe \u2013 the Nativity scene<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n


Nativity scenes here are an art form. From simple tabletop displays to elaborate city installations with moving parts, music, lighting, and even life-sized figures, they are everywhere. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of my favorites is the beautifully detailed presepe displayed each year on San Vincenzo\u2019s main Corso<\/strong>, in the window of the Farmacia (Pharmacy)<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Italy is also famous for its Christmas markets, and my wife and I have visited many in northern Italy, where snowcapped Dolomites<\/em> and Alpine<\/em> peaks frame postcard-perfect villages. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

These markets are wonderful places to find handmade ornaments, carved wooden figures, and nativity pieces that eventually make their way into Italian homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each item carries the spirit of the place where it was made.
San Vincenzo itself comes alive at Christmas.<\/em><\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Corso sparkles with lights, shops buzz with holiday energy, concerts fill the air, and caroling becomes part of daily life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

My wife sings in the city choir, which often travels to nearby towns to perform\u2014another beautiful thread in the fabric of the season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Italian Christmas Table<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n


Food, of course, is at the heart of everything.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n


The first major feast arrives on Christmas Eve\u2014La Vigilia di Natale<\/em><\/strong>\u2014traditionally centered on fish and
shared with family. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year, we were invited to the home of a close friend, Guilherme<\/em><\/strong> (a Brazilian with dual Italian citizenship) to celebrate with his new girlfriend, Vanessa.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was a remarkable evening.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n


Vanessa<\/strong><\/em>, who works in top management for a Brazilian winery and may soon move to Italy, prepared an inspired fusion feast: ricotta and seafood ravioli with Brazilian accents; bruschetta topped with Tuscan ham, arugula, ricotta, blackberry jelly, and Tartufo cheese. It was unforgettable.<\/em><\/strong>
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Christmas Day, however, belongs to il pranzo di Natale\u2014an enormous lunch with many courses, flowing wine, and hours of conversation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dessert is typically Panettone (from Milan) or Pandoro (from Verona)<\/strong><\/em>, often served with espresso and something stronger afterward.
The day after Christmas, Santo Stefano<\/em><\/strong>, is another national holiday devoted to visiting friends
and\u2014naturally\u2014another feast (usually leftovers).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then comes New Year\u2019s Eve (La Vigilia di Capodanno<\/em><\/strong>), when Italians famously \u201ceat their way to midnight.\u201d Lentils are essential, symbolizing good luck and prosperity for the coming year, followed by music, fireworks, and celebration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Back to That Christmas Lunch<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

By the time we reached dessert at Patrizia and Salvatore\u2019s table<\/strong><\/em>, we had enjoyed an abundance of food:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

spritz and tagliati to begin, followed by pizzoccheri, extraordinary local wines, two kinds of fish lasagna, sausage pie, pumpkin pie, cheese rolls with croutons, dessert, coffee, and grappa.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n


Wives and husbands moved effortlessly between kitchen and table, ensuring nothing\u2014and no one\u2014was ever lacking. Conversation flowed easily for more than six hours. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Teenagers, grandparents, friends, hosts, and guests all shared the same space with genuine joy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There was no tension, no politics, no division\u2014only laughter, stories, and warmth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


I smiled when I saw Antonio<\/em><\/strong> playing with the six-month-old baby, making silly faces and drawing smiles so pure they melted my heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


As evening approached, Lynn<\/strong><\/em> and I finally said our goodbyes so we could call family back in America. We left full\u2014of food, yes\u2014but even more so of gratitude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


My wife and I usually spend New Year\u2019s Eve quietly at home in our Tuscan villa\u2014enjoying a leisurely dinner, excellent Tuscan wine, and most importantly enjoying each other! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, close to midnight, we slowly ascend to the upper balcony where we have an unobstructed view of the Etruscan coastline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We each have a glass of the best Tuscan wine. Often, a full moon is out which bounces sparkling reflections off the distant sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sky is always filled with endless stars.<\/strong> Then it happens\u2026 the steady progression of explosions booming colorful sprinkles of new year birth down the entire coastline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is amazing. It is magical. Even so, when I look into my wife\u2019s eyes, I realize that nothing is more magical than the two of us existing together, in this wonderful land with such wonderful friends.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
